Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.

A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
