EU Maritime Forces Rescue Sailors After Somali Piracy Incident on Vessel

EU naval forces have safely freed two dozen crew members from a Maltese-flagged oil tanker that was attacked by pirates off the shoreline of Somali waters.

The vessel, which was carrying fuel from India to South African destinations, was taken over on Thursday when heavily armed attackers began shooting with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades before boarding the ship.

The crew secured themselves inside a fortified citadel while the pirates took control of the marine transport.

Successful Rescue Operation

A naval vessel, functioning under the EU's anti-piracy mission, reached the tanker on the following day. Special forces boarded the craft and found all 24 crew members unharmed.

"The crew is safe and no injuries have been documented. During the incident, they remained in the secure area in constant communication with command center," authorities stated, noting that a "demonstration of power" had convinced the pirates to leave the ship before the warship arrived.

Ongoing Threat

Officials added that the danger level in the area "continues to be serious" as the pirates are still in the area.

The rescue operation involved a aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicle and reconnaissance plane. Just hours earlier, another ship in the identical region was approached by a fast boat but successfully avoided it.

Return of Maritime Crime

This incident represents the latest in a series of incidents that have raised alarms about a renewal of piracy in the region.

Such activity had declined when international naval patrols and security measures were introduced after reaching their highest point more than a decade ago.

However, assaults by Yemen's Houthi rebels on ships in the Arabian Sea, which have been carried out for the past two years, have caused ships to be rerouted through the African coastline - opening up new possibilities for local pirate groups.

Incident Data

  • Multiple piracy cases of piracy took place off the shoreline of the Somali region last year
  • Three hijackings were documented among these events
  • Only one incident of maritime crime was noted in the preceding year

Maritime security experts are closely watching the developments as shipping companies travel through these increasingly dangerous waters.
