Significant Web Failure Impacts Dozens Websites and Mobile Apps
A widespread online outage has impacted dozens online platforms and mobile apps around the world, as users reporting problems connecting to the web due to difficulties at Amazon’s cloud computing service.
The impacted services comprise the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, along with several Amazon-managed services including its primary shopping platform and the Ring doorbell device manufacturer.
Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was affected in addition to its branches Halifax and the Scottish bank, with additional accounts of issues using the the tax authority website on that morning. Also in the UK, multiple Ring device owners turned to online platforms to state their security devices were malfunctioning.
In the UK alone, reports of disruptions on specific apps totaled the tens of thousands for every service.
The company stated that the problem originated in the east coast of the America at the cloud division, a unit that provides crucial web backbone for many firms, who rent out resources on the company's servers. Amazon Web Services is the most extensive web hosting service.
Shortly after late night (PDT) in the United States (8am BST), the company announced “higher problem frequencies and slowdowns” for the cloud services in a region on the Atlantic seaboard of the America. The widespread consequence seemed to disrupt services around the world, with the Downdetector site showing issues with the corresponding services in different parts of the world.
The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a platform that reports on internet outages, additionally noted a rise in problems on the start of the week, with many of them situated in the Virginia area, the location of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where officials confirmed the outage began.
