The Year 2026 Hailed as the Age of the Croaking Craze.
While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am certain that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Considering a band of frogs is known as an army, it seems they are taking over the industry.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Amphibians have been anything but new to the gaming landscape. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. Yet, their prevalence has seemingly exploded in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a significant portion are bona fide Frog Games.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To quantify this trend, I undertook a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The data tell a compelling story: a steady increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's growing prominence in the public consciousness is also visible elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the trend in gaming seems uniquely pronounced.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
In my opinion, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs have natural appealing traits for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a host of innovative control schemes.
Many of the featured titles directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year yet.
If these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be entering a true amphibian entertainment revival.
