British Foreign Office has added 11 more nations to its official alert list regarding the threats of toxic alcohol poisoning from contaminated spirits.

This revised warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "an international surge in the number of reported cases" of toxic alcohol contamination.

Only a few weeks ago, authorities had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, following several notable events like the deadly demise of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being advised that even tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can lead to blindness or fatality within 12–48 hours.

What is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous chemical typically used in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. This substance is not meant for human consumption.

Although it is naturally produced during the production of beverages, commercial firms reduce it to low, safe levels for drinking through the distillation process.

But in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to save money, and since it is flavorless and scentless, it is very difficult to notice.

Authorities' Recommendations for Tourists

Foreign Office minister a senior official emphasized that each tourist should know the signs of industrial alcohol poisoning.

"If you're drinking spirits in foreign countries, stick to reputable establishments and steer clear of local brews or unspecified beverages," the official advised.

"Should anything feels off, like a hangover that's much more severe than normal or sight issues – seek medical attention immediately."

The complete register of destinations noted as posing a risk of industrial alcohol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
