United Nations Ends Penalties on President of Syria Ahead of White House Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

The UN Security Council approved to an American proposal ending penalties on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria before his Washington trip the coming week.

Sharaa was named provisional head of state after leading an insurgent campaign that drove out Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, ending 13 years of domestic strife.

Washington's ambassador UN ambassador Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "a strong political signal" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a new era" after Assad's removal.

He had been subject to UN sanctions as the leader of the Islamist group the HTS movement, once connected to the terrorist network. The US removed the group from its registry of foreign terror groups in July.

More Penalties Removed

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on penalties against the Syrian interior official Minister Anas Khattab.

The Syrian diplomatic chief welcomed the removal of the sanctions, declaring through digital channels: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and allied countries for backing of Syria and its people."

Imminent Washington Talks

The Syrian leader's Washington trip this coming Monday comes after President Trump remarked that Sharaa demonstrated "substantial headway" in establishing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.

Subsequent to their talks, Trump said Sharaa possessed "a genuine opportunity to unify the country".

The pair met for the first time during May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia during a visit to Arab nations.

After that meeting, Trump portrayed him as a "resilient figure" having a "formative history".

His former militant faction was al-Qaeda's affiliate inside the country prior to breaking relations in 2016.

Previous US Visit

The upcoming meeting will not be Sharaa's first trip to America during this period. In September, he became the initial Syrian president to speak before the UN General Assembly at UN headquarters for nearly six decades.

Throughout his presentation, he stated the country had been "restoring its proper position across international circles" and expressed solidarity with the people of Gaza.
