US President Donald Trump Gives Sunday Ultimatum for the Militant Group to Agree to Gaza Agreement
The US leader Trump has delivered a time limit to Hamas, calling for them to approve a American settlement for the Gaza region or risk extreme actions.
In a post on his Truth Social channel on the end of the week, the President announced that an deal must be achieved by 6 PM EST (22:00 GMT) on the coming Sunday.
The suggested plan involves an swift halt to hostilities and the release within three days of twenty surviving Israeli captives held by the group—along with the bodies of hostages believed to be no longer alive—in return for hundreds of detained Palestinians.
Arab and Turkish intermediaries are believed to be encouraging the organization for a agreeable response to the plan, but a senior group official has indicated that the militant faction is likely to refuse it.
"Should this ULTIMATE deal is not reached, all HELL, like anyone has previously witnessed, will occur against Hamas. THERE WILL BE CALM IN THE MIDDLE EAST NO MATTER WHAT," the President wrote in the online message.
Mediators have been in touch with the leader of the group's armed faction in the territory, who has indicated that he does not agree to the recent US ceasefire proposal, based on information.
Sources indicate that a portion of the group's political leadership in the Gulf state are willing to agreeing to the agreement with changes—but have found their authority limited as they lack command over the hostages kept by the organization.
A further obstacle for some in Hamas is that the agreement necessitates them to hand over the entirety of the hostages over the opening short window of the ceasefire—giving away their only bargaining chip.
It is estimated to be forty-eight hostages presently being held in the Palestinian region by the armed faction, merely twenty of whom are estimated to be living.
Israel's defense forces launched a campaign in the Gaza Strip in response to the Hamas-led assault on the region on 7 October 2023, in which approximately 1,200 people were lost their lives and 251 others were taken hostage.
No fewer than sixty-six thousand two hundred eighty-eight residents have been fatally injured in Israel's operations in the territory following the start, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health authority.
