Used Fishing Nets from French Coast Evolve into Essential Shield Against Russian Drones in Ukraine

Along the harbor docks of French fishing ports, accumulations of old nets now represent a common sight.

The operational period of ocean trawling nets usually lasts between 12 and 24 months, following this period they become damaged and unusable.

Currently, this horsehair netting, originally designed for harvesting monkfish from the marine bottom, is finding new application for a different kind of capture: enemy unmanned aircraft.

Humanitarian Initiative Converts Marine Waste

A coastal assistance group has dispatched two consignments of nets extending 280km to the conflict zone to protect troops and residents along the combat zone where conflict intensifies.

The enemy deploys low-cost aerial vehicles armed with explosives, controlling them by remote control for spans of up to 15.5 miles.

"During the past 24 months, the war has evolved. Previously we never considered about drones, but now it's a unmanned vehicle battle," explained a humanitarian organizer.

Strategic Application of Marine Mesh

Military personnel use the nets to construct passageways where unmanned aircraft rotors become trapped. This approach has been likened to spiders catching flies in a mesh.

"Our contacts have informed us they require specific any old nets. They received multiple that are unusable," the representative explained.

"Our specific shipments are made of horse hair and used for marine harvesting to catch powerful sea creatures which are quite powerful and strike the mesh with a force comparable to that of a drone."

Growing Implementations

At first deployed by doctors protecting medical camps near the frontline, the nets are now employed on transport routes, crossings, the healthcare center gateways.

"It's astonishing that such basic material works so well," observed the organization leader.

"We face no shortage of marine gear in this region. It creates difficulty to know where to send them as several companies that repurpose the gear have closed."

Operational Hurdles

The charitable organization was established after expatriate citizens contacted the leaders requesting help regarding basic necessities and treatment resources for Ukraine.

A team of helpers have transported two lorry consignments of relief supplies 2,300km to the border crossing point.

"When we learned that Ukraine required mesh material, the fishing community acted promptly," stated the humanitarian coordinator.

Aerial Combat Evolution

Russian forces employ first-person view drones comparable to those on the commercial market that can be guided by wireless command and are then loaded with detonation devices.

Russian pilots with instant visual data direct them to their objectives. In certain regions, defense units report that nothing can move without drawing the notice of swarms of "killer" suicide aircraft.

Protective Tactics

The trawling material are extended across supports to establish protective passageways or used to cover trenches and vehicles.

Friendly aerial vehicles are also equipped with sections of mesh to drop on enemy drones.

During summer months, Ukraine was confronting more than 500 drones daily.

International Support

Multiple tons of old nets have also been donated by fishers in Sweden and Denmark.

A former fisheries committee president stated that regional fishermen are more than happy to support the defense cause.

"They are proud to know their former gear is going to contribute to safety," he stated publicly.

Financial Limitations

The association no longer has the funds to transport further gear this year and discussions were underway for Ukraine to send lorries to pick up the nets.

"We shall assist get the nets and load them but we lack the financial capacity to continue running convoys ourselves," stated the charity spokesperson.

Practical Limitations

An armed services communicator reported that protective mesh corridors were being implemented across the conflict area, about 75 percent of which is now reported to be held and governed by opposition military.

She commented that opposition vehicle controllers were increasingly finding ways to penetrate the mesh.

"Nets are not a panacea. They are just a particular aspect of protection against drones," she clarified.

An ex-agricultural business owner expressed that the people he interacted with were moved by the assistance from French fishing towns.

"The fact that those in the coastal economy the distant part of the continent are dispatching gear to help them defend themselves has brought a few tears to their eyes," he finished.
