Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the option to contest particular rulings from the official, echoing the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
